Camping in the Netherlands with kids
The Netherlands is the most underrated family camping country in Europe. Drives are short, campsites are set up for children to roam freely, cycling is safe from the age of five, and — crucially — the best parks are built for weather that cannot be trusted. If your holiday depends on there being something to do in the rain, start here.
Regions to choose from
The North Sea coast (Zeeland, Noord-Holland, the Wadden islands) gives dunes, wide beaches and wind. Gelderland and the Veluwe offer forest, cycling and wildlife. Limburg has gentle hills and the country's largest holiday parks, while Friesland and the lakes suit families who want water sports over slides.
Indoor pools and play barns
Dutch family parks lead Europe on wet-weather facilities: heated indoor pools, covered play barns, indoor climbing and soft-play halls. When you compare sites, check whether the indoor pool is open all season and whether the play barn is included in the price.
Cycling with children
Segregated cycle paths make the Netherlands the easiest place in Europe to cycle with kids. Most campsites rent bikes, child seats and trailers, and a network of numbered junctions means you can plan a safe 15 km loop with a five-year-old and never share a road with a car.
What it costs
A family pitch runs €30-55 per night in high season, and a mobile home or lodge €550-1,200 per week. Dutch school holidays in July and August fill sites quickly, but late August and September are quiet and noticeably cheaper.
Practical notes
Bring waterproofs even in July, expect a tourist tax per person per night, and check whether the site charges for showers. Nature campsites in the dunes and on the islands limit car access — great for freedom, harder with heavy luggage.
