There is no single best campsite in Europe — there is a best campsite for your family, your budget and the week you can travel. France: the safest all-round choice
France has more family campsites than anywhere else, the deepest supply of heated aqua parks and the shortest drive from the UK, Belgium and the Netherlands. Prices in July and August are high on the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts, but June and September are excellent value with the same facilities open.
Spain: the long season
Spain wins on reliable heat from May to October and on the sheer scale of its aqua complexes. The trade-off is drive time and August temperatures inland, which can exceed 38°C. Coastal Catalonia and the Costa Dorada are the family heartland; air conditioning is worth paying for.
Italy: coast plus culture
Italy's Adriatic coast and Lake Garda combine large family parks with day trips to Venice, Verona or the Dolomites. Beaches are shallow and calm, which suits small children, and pitch prices sit slightly below prime French coastal sites.
The Netherlands, Germany and Denmark: rain-proof options
Northern Europe compensates for the weather with indoor pools, covered play barns and short drives. The Netherlands in particular has a strong tradition of family parks with indoor water facilities — a smart pick for a first camping trip or for a school-holiday week outside summer.
Portugal and Croatia: fewer crowds
Portugal's Algarve and Silver Coast offer quieter parks and dependable surf, while Croatia's Istrian and Dalmatian sites deliver clear water and pine shade at prices below Italy. Both need a longer journey or a flight plus rental car.
How to compare two shortlisted campsites
Put them side by side on six data points: distance to the beach or lake in metres, heated pool yes or no, kids' club minimum age, opening dates of the aqua park, high-season price per week for your accommodation, and the review score from families rather than the overall average.
