School-holiday camping in Europe: prices and how to save
If you can only travel in the school holidays, you are competing with every other family in Europe for the same three weeks. Prices on the best parks can double, and the sites with the biggest aqua parks sell out first. You cannot change the calendar, but you can change almost everything else.
The three most expensive weeks
Peak pricing across France, Spain and Italy clusters in the last week of July and the first two weeks of August, when French, Dutch, German and Italian holidays all overlap. The week of 15 August is the single busiest on Mediterranean coasts.
Shift by one week, save 20-30%
The last week of August is materially cheaper than the first, because continental families return to school earlier than British ones. Facilities are still fully open and the sea is at its warmest all year.
Book early, then watch for price drops
Early-booking discounts of 10-25% run from September to February for the following summer. Many operators allow free amendment up to a few weeks before arrival, so booking early and re-checking later costs nothing but attention.
Trade coast for inland
Sites 30-40 minutes from the sea are routinely 25-40% cheaper than beachfront parks with identical pools and clubs. With a car and a good aqua park on site, the compromise is smaller than it looks.
Other levers worth pulling
Choose a smaller accommodation and use the terrace, skip the linen pack, clean the unit yourself to avoid the end-of-stay fee, travel midweek to cut ferry and tunnel costs, and look at Portugal, Croatia and northern Spain where high-season pricing is gentler than on the French Mediterranean.
