France has more campsites than any other country in Europe — over 8,000 listed, of which roughly 2,500 are explicitly family-oriented. Picking the right one in the right region is the difference between a magical week and a stressful one. This guide walks through the trade-offs.
Pick the region first, the campsite second
Provence and the Côte d'Azur deliver classic Mediterranean weather but get crowded in August. The Atlantic coast (Vendée, Charente-Maritime, Landes) offers softer surf, pine forests and slightly cooler temperatures — ideal for younger kids. The Dordogne and Ardèche are the picks for nature-loving families who don't need a beach. Alsace and the Alps work brilliantly for spring and early-summer trips.
Mobile home vs. tent vs. glamping
Mobile homes have become the default family option: a real bed for everyone, a private bathroom, a kitchen and a covered terrace. Tents and pitches are cheaper but harder work with under-fives. Glamping (safari tents, pods, lodges) sits in between and tends to feel like a proper holiday accommodation.
Amenities that actually matter with kids
A heated pool with a slide, a fenced playground, a supervised kids' club from age 4 and on-site catering will save you a daily logistics puzzle. Beach access is great but a 15-minute walk with a toddler stops being romantic by day two — check the exact distance.
When to book
July and August on the Med are usually fully booked by April for top family parks. May and June are ideal for last-minute deals on the same parks at half the price.
